Board adds Region 8 cooperative to expand food commodity options

The West Rusk County Consolidated ISD Board unanimously approved an inter-local agreement to add Region 8 as a cooperative and commodity processing unit.
Food Nutrition Director Evie Bazaldua told trustees the district would continue using Region 7 but adding Region 8 expands vendor and commodity options, including additional government commodity choices through Sysco, which operates in Longview. Bazaldua said there is "no cost to join Region 8" and that Region 8 follows USDA and Buy American procurement policies for commodities.
Trustee Jeff Mason moved to approve the inter-local agreement; the motion was seconded by Matt Eastwood and passed unanimously with those present. The addition is intended to provide more food options and procurement flexibility for the district's nutrition program.
