Planner Amber McDonald presented a variance request on Jan. 6 to permit a 6‑foot‑tall PVC fence in the front yard at 321 N Hennis Road. McDonald said staff recommended approval subject to staff conditions; board members questioned the sequencing of the variance and special exception, the code requirement for opaque screening of outside storage, the potential effect on driveway sightlines near a retention pond, whether front‑yard landscaping would be added, and whether a brick wall was an option. City staff said enhanced landscaping and a sight‑triangle review would be required and that a brick wall is not mandatory. The board approved the variance 6–1, with Chairman Will Hawthorne opposing.
No members of the public spoke on the variance. The discussion noted the variance was considered before the related special exception in order to address the front yard fencing that faces Hennis Road. The motion to approve was made by Board Member Linda Bennett, seconded by Mark Hide; the recorded tally was 6 in favor and 1 opposed.
