State denies National Register eligibility for Dade City Cemetery; board says local value remains

City staff told the Dade City Historic Preservation Advisory Board that the state sent a denial on Sept. 15 saying the Dade City Cemetery "does not meet the criteria of individual listings in the National Register for Historic Places," and that cemeteries are often ineligible unless connected to individuals of transcendent national importance or a nationally significant event.
Staff walked the board through the application timeline: the city submitted the application Aug. 8; the state requested more information the next day; the city provided the requested materials on Sept. 9; and the state issued its denial on Sept. 15. A staff member said the denial "doesn't mean that the cemetery is not important to Dade City; the state just deemed it not important to the national portion." Board members discussed whether listing more families or stronger narrative links to town development could make the case in a future application, but several members cautioned that National Register rules make cemetery listings difficult. One member noted this was a useful learning experience and urged the board to stay positive and pursue future opportunities.
No new action was taken at the meeting; members recommended revisiting the application with additional documentation if the board chooses to pursue state or national listing again.
