Zoning Board denies two-family subdivision at 58 Old Bridge Turnpike, citing neighborhood character

The Borough of South River Zoning Board on Sept. 24 denied an application by AJ Andre & JR Properties to relocate a lot line and construct a two-family dwelling at 58 Old Bridge Turnpike in the R100 zone.
Attorney Lawrence Sachs presented testimony from engineer Brent Papi, architect Joseph Hyland and planner Veena Sawant, who said there are other multi-family units nearby and argued the project met positive and negative criteria for a variance. Several board members disagreed, with Chair Robert Bodak and Planner Todd Bletcher noting the Master Plan’s single-family zoning for the area. Board members Nick Giannakopoulos, Edward Trygar, John Frost and Bodak said the proposed two-family structure would not fit the neighborhood’s character; the motion to approve was denied. The roll call in favor was Sandra Adelino, Ruell Brown and Jeremiah O'Grady; opposed were Giannakopoulos, Trygar, Frost and Bodak. The Board recorded the motion as denied.
