Parent raises Second Step concern; principal and administration say current curriculum meets state requirements

During open forum at the Nov. 17 meeting, Jade Wray asked the board to revisit the middle school’s use of Second Step, citing concerns she associated with earlier, online commentary. Superintendent Tammy Jones said staff had reexamined the curriculum and would have a district speaker address the item next month.
Principal Mclnturff told trustees that "the key areas of emotional learning that are integrated into the Health Education TEKS, and mandated by the state, are taught in the Second Step curriculum," and that the current materials have been revised since 2021 and vetted by campus and district staff with no evidence of the questionable topics Wray cited. The board did not take formal action on the curriculum at this meeting.
