Dot Campbell, a 29-year Blue Lake resident, told the Public Safety Commission that her neighborhood group — “Dot's Pod” — trains neighbors to look out for each other in emergencies and to maintain simple supplies.
"Put some sweat into our safety now and it'll pay for years to come is our feeling," Dot Campbell said, urging residents to form small pods and offering help to set them up.
Laura Chapman, a CERT member who helps lead pod outreach, described the pods' role as a local information network that helps first responders prioritize needs. "If we have a large disaster here, we could be on our own without outside help for days to weeks or longer at a time," Chapman said, noting pod leaders share household-skill information and confidential household forms to guide assistance.
Anne Holcomb described mapping and neighbor-to-neighbor checks used in her top-of-the-hill pod and linked the effort to recent regional VOAD/COAD organizing and conferences that emphasize local self-reliance. Commissioners noted examples of pod reach, including one pod of 14 families and another that reported about 20 households, and discussed using pods to quickly distribute public-safety materials such as a July 4 flyer that commissioners credited with quieter holiday results.
The commission invited pod leaders to continue coordinating with CERT, Red Cross sheltering staff and city distribution lists; no formal action was taken beyond acceptance of the presentations.
