Council hears progress on culverts, channels and Master Drainage Plan repairs

Stormwater staff outlined recent and planned drainage work across the city, including culvert replacements, reinforced concrete pipe crossings and channel repairs near the hospital, school and neighborhood creeks. Sofia described several completed projects and noted that some repairs cost more than originally budgeted after crews uncovered additional damage in the field. "It cost a little bit more than what was on the master drainage plan and what we thought," Sofia said, describing a concrete junction installation on Main and Jefferson.
Council members asked about Main Street Creek and options under consideration; staff said they are still in the design phase and are evaluating whether to widen the channel or use a green-stormwater solution with stabilization and flood-plain storage. Staff also discussed multi-phase work at the McAlester Regional Airport and the need to coordinate access with private property owners for some canal cleanouts.
