McAlester hospital cites recruitment challenges; spouse support identified as key barrier

Julie Powell told the council that recruiting physicians to rural McAlester is affected by online chatter and by a lack of opportunities for spouses. "Social media really does a hindrance to our abilities to recruit top talent in this area," she said, and later asked rhetorically, "So what is there for the spouse to do?" as she described efforts to include spouses in recruitment outreach.
Powell said the hospital has started market studies and is pursuing partnerships with larger regional health systems and specialty providers; she described strategies that include contracting advanced practice providers with physician upline telemedicine support and working with local government on community supports to make relocation more attractive.
