Council advances traffic safety measures: new signals, turn restrictions and intersection appropriation

The Elizabeth City Council on Feb. 10 advanced multiple traffic measures. Council adopted on first reading ordinances to install new traffic signals (Third Ave. & South Street/South Reid Street; Grove Street & West End Place) and to add no‑left‑turn restrictions at East Grand Street and Reid Street, plus a new code section prohibiting through movements at the Reid/East Grand intersection. Councilman William Gallman said he had "tried several times to make this intersection safe" and supports a no‑left‑turn approach to improve safety.
Separately, council introduced Ordinance No. 6258, appropriating $1.2 million for intersection improvements (Traffic Lights—Madison and Jackson) and noted that the New Jersey Department of Transportation awarded a $744,014 grant to partially fund the project. The ordinance's public hearing was scheduled for March 10, 2026.
