The Elizabeth City Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Feb. 10 urging the President, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Congress to grant or extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals and other immigrant communities living in countries beset by violence, corruption or natural disaster. The resolution stressed that TPS holders are "long‑standing, law‑abiding residents" who contribute to the local economy and that forced returns would create serious humanitarian harm.
Councilwoman Patricia Perkins‑Auguste introduced the request on the council floor and asked for colleagues' support. The resolution directs that certified copies be sent to the President, the Secretary of Homeland Security, New Jersey's congressional delegation and other officials. The council conditioned no further local action; the resolution is a formal request for federal action.
