Students and booster leaders praise plan for new turf practice field; FCCLA grant will fund inclusive playground work

Multiple students and parent boosters addressed the board to thank trustees for approving improvements to the Weslaco High School practice field and associated lighting. Student speakers said turf will make practice safer and reduce cancellations caused by muddy conditions. Mario Vallejo, a junior and trumpet player, told the board the decision to add turf "will make a great impact on the quality of our practice" and said the new surface will reduce injuries and weather-related rehearsal loss.
Booster president Linda Guerrero Dicla detailed the boosters' fundraising history and needs, saying the group has awarded about $42,000 in scholarships over the past three years and continues to support band operations. She asked trustees to approve the procurement method for the WHS practice-field, synthetic turf and lighting and emphasized parents’ appreciation. The meeting also included an announcement that the Weslaco High School FCCLA received an approximately $43,000 grant from the NAB Community Care Foundation to support an adopt-a-park initiative and purchase inclusive playground equipment at Gibson Park.
Trustees and the superintendent acknowledged the speakers’ comments and thanked students, parents and donors for their work supporting students’ fine-arts programs.
