Weslaco ISD studies metal detectors, fencing and bus tracking app for safety

Superintendent Dr. Richard Rivera told trustees the district is studying additional safety measures, including the possible use of metal detectors in stadiums, anti-scaling fencing, privacy fence screening at one campus and a bus-location app to give parents real-time access.
"We're studying additional security measures like metal detectors in our stadium," Rivera said, and added the district plans to pilot a bus tracking app in January so parents can see where their children are on buses. He also described a districtwide fencing plan with anti-scaling features and noted consideration of electronic gates and increased visibility by staff and security personnel.
Board members asked about how security staffing is allocated across larger campuses and requested a study that considers campus square footage as well as enrollment. Rivera agreed to analyze guard coverage relative to campus size and population and return with recommendations.
