Weslaco ISD warns of enrollment loss tied to school-choice and online programs

Superintendent Dr. Richard Rivera told trustees that, as of the second six-week reporting period, district enrollment is 62 students lower than the same period last year, and he identified possible statewide policy changes and out-of-district virtual programs as risks to attendance-based funding.
"As of the 2nd 6 weeks, we're at a minus 62 students," Rivera said, adding that proposed Texas House measures on school choice and the growth of accredited online schools could shift Average Daily Attendance (ADA) — and with it funding — to other districts.
Board members asked what steps the district would take to retain families and reiterated a need for a clear community-facing enrollment plan. Rivera said staff are studying transfers, rezoning and residential growth and will return with recommendations.
