At its Jan. 15 meeting the Ridgefield Park Board of Recreation reviewed youth-basketball operations and safety after a serious injury during a game in which a sixth-grade girl broke both wrists. The board said it reached out to the family and supplied the forms they need to file and offered additional assistance.
The board confirmed that Rutgers safety-clinic cards were received for coaches who attended a Dec. 2 clinic and stressed the need for a complete list of coaches, assistants and site managers for background checks and certification verification. The minutes emphasize that division heads must submit full names for referees, scorers/timers and site managers, that two people should staff scorer/timer desks when possible, and that scorers/timers must submit W-9s to be added to the town’s vendor list for payment.
Travel-team practice schedules and coaches were listed for various age groups. The board considered but declined a pre-season in-person rules meeting, opting to send rules by email. The board also noted that gym space is unavailable on several school-determined dates and reminded divisions to enforce a no-cell-phone rule at scorer/timer tables to avoid distractions.
