Board directs consultant study of enrollment, school consolidations after 20-year trend review

Planning and Boundaries Director Steve Hogan reviewed enrollment trends over the past 20 years and projections through 2030, including a recap that the Area 5 study was suspended indefinitely. Superintendent Ben Horsley said the upcoming West Kearns rebuild and other area considerations require "an earnest conversation" about school sizing, consolidation and boundary adjustments.
Board members pressed for better student-retention data before making closure decisions. Board Member Karyn Winder said, "We know numbers are declining, we 100% know that, but we also asked four months ago for data to be collected on where these kids have gone... I don’t feel like I can make any decision tonight because I don’t have the data I asked for." The board generally supported hiring a consultant to perform a district-wide study; administration will provide student retention data by August and ALC/DLI program study results by November.
