The board approved a not‑to‑exceed change order of $157,397.69 to correct unsuitable soil discovered during the SMS turf replacement at Serpentini Field; with that change the total project cost with FieldTurf USA shall not exceed $750,312.56. Superintendent Dr. Ryba explained that when contractors peeled back the turf they discovered a part of the field with unstable soils and a suspected slow water leak beneath the scoreboard side. "What we found is on the scoreboard side, we have water lines that run underneath the field... one of the water lines over there is believed to have had a slow leak," Dr. Ryba said, explaining the soil must be stabilized with cement treatment before replacement turf is installed.
Board members moved and seconded the change order; the superintendent and staff confirmed the primary funding for the project had been private donations, and that the soil correction represents a one‑time use of capital funds (permanent improvement and building turf funds) rather than the district general fund. The board approved the change order by roll call and staff said contingency plans are in place should the project be delayed for a few weeks.
