City Manager Michael Dzugan said the increase is one of three revenue changes in the proposed 2026 budget intended to ensure funding for critical facility improvements at the Police Station and to replace Fire Station 39; he also cited a proposed 3 percent increase in the property-tax levy. "The ordinance would raise the local sales tax from 1% to 1.25%, effective July 1, 2026," Dzugan said during his presentation.
The item was introduced as a first reading; no final vote was taken. The council must complete the ordinance and file it with state tax authorities by April 1 for a July 1 effective date. Councilmembers did not record extended debate in the minutes; the council will consider further action on the ordinance at a subsequent meeting.
