Court to pursue lease with VFW for new facility that could serve as storm shelter

"They're also wanting to make that when they build, they make it a storm shelter open for people too, so that would be an asset to the community," the presiding officer said. Court discussion noted the land appears on records as about 12 acres but, by drawing, measures closer to about nine acres; the presiding officer said the county will secure a survey and fold the legal description into any proposed lease. A possible lease structure mentioned during discussion was a nominal annual payment (for example, $1 per year) for an extended term (a 99-year lease was floated) while the county researches legality and bid requirements. The court asked staff and legal counsel to draft a contract for future consideration.
