The Palos Heights Finance Committee met Jan. 13 and unanimously approved routine bills, multiple grant requests and an engagement with outside counsel to address a dispute over the Jewel redevelopment agreement. Chairman McGrogan called the meeting to order at 6:31 p.m., with Aldermen Key, Scully and Brennan present alongside city staff.
Alderman Scully moved to approve the Dec. 9, 2025 meeting minutes, and Alderman Key moved to approve bills and grant requests that included Morris Engineering ($3,135.00), Thomas Brown ($1,800.00), Laner Muchin ($1,291.67), Hiskes & Dillner ($6,213.00), a sign grant for Sanna Bin Hussien ($1,250.00) and a $10,000 business improvement grant to Carras Corporation. The committee also approved a second payment to the Palos Heights Library for $184,962.59. All motions passed on unanimous voice votes.
Staff told the committee that Jewel's repeated reassessments have lowered taxable assessed value, costing the City about $2 million in assessed value and roughly $200,000 in property taxes annually; the committee voted to engage Miller Canfield to address the redevelopment agreement. City Administrator Adam Jasinski reported the city will seek a property manager to lease the house at 12313 S 71st Court and approved Landmark Property Maintenance to manage the property.
The meeting concluded after a new-business motion allowing staff to decide on displaying Chicago Bears banners, flags or lights for the playoffs; the committee adjourned at 7:22 p.m.
