Interim Superintendent Dr. Monica Luna presented the item on behalf of Assistant Superintendent Nancy Montemayor, saying the district must submit a board‑approved calendar the following week to apply. "The major change is 5 additional instructional days, which brings the calendar to 175 instructional days," Dr. Luna said, adding staff and parents favored the version labeled Calendar B.
Board President Claudia Coronado moved to approve the calendar "with most votes today and then amend in the future if needed or if the grant isn't awarded," and Jaime Gaona seconded. The motion passed with five votes for, zero against; two trustees (Juan Viveros and Omar Garcia) were absent. The board recorded the vote as: Coronado, Perez, Degollado, Gaona and Peña — For; For: 5, Against: 0, Absent: 2.
Dr. Luna told the board that having 175 instructional days does not guarantee the district will win the grant but would allow Valley View ISD to apply. She said the Calendar Committee and the district’s DWEIC (districtwide committee) met and that Calendar B received the most votes from staff and parents. The board did not amend the calendar at the meeting but approved a motion that allows future amendment if the grant is not awarded.
The approval was the primary substantive action of the brief special meeting; no public commenters had signed up to speak on the item.
