McFarland School Board votes to enter closed session to discuss certified staff personnel complaint

The McFarland School Board voted unanimously April 21 to move into closed session to consult with legal counsel and discuss a certified staff personnel complaint.
"Motion by Howery, second by Hughey to go into closed session at 6:00 p.m. under Wis. Stat. §19.85(1)(g) Conferring with legal counsel for the governmental body who is rendering oral or written advice concerning strategy to be adopted by the body with respect to litigation in which it is or is likely to become involved and (f) Considering financial, medical, social or personal histories or disciplinary data of specific persons, preliminary consideration of specific personnel problems or the investigation of charges against specific persons… (To discuss certified staff personnel complaint)," School Board member Craig Howery moved, and Meredith Hughey seconded the motion, which passed on a 5-0 roll-call vote.
Board President Meghan Fessler presided; the minutes list all five board members—Fessler, Craig Howery, Bruce Fischer, Megan Chatman and Meredith Hughey—as present when the motion passed. Attorneys Shana Lewis of Renning, Lewis & Lacy, s.c., and Kimberly Walker of MWH Law Group attended as legal counsel; the minutes state no district administrators were present for the closed-session discussion.
Because the discussion occurred in closed session under state statute, the minutes record only that the board "discussed a certified staff personnel complaint with legal counsel" and do not disclose the substance of that discussion. Board member Megan Chatman left the meeting at 8:12 p.m.; later, Meredith Hughey moved to adjourn, seconded by Craig Howery, and the motion carried 4-0.
