Granton district says 'The community has spoken' after referendum defeat; committee to convene

The Granton Area School District board heard final canvass results from District Administrator Nancy Popp after the district's recent referendum failed 148–543.
"The community has spoken," Popp said, urging the board to act quickly to plan next steps. She said the district will open a planning process that includes staff, parents, students and community members and scheduled the first meeting for April 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the library.
Popp outlined immediate priorities: reopening lines of communication with neighboring districts, examining the process for a state trust fund loan, preparing possible new referendum language and compiling a list of budget cuts to build a balanced 2026–27 budget. Several community members who spoke during public comment expressed interest in serving on a planning committee; the board did not take a formal vote on a new question at the meeting.
The announcement follows routine board business earlier in the meeting; the district plans to continue regular operations while exploring those options and will report back to the public as the committee meets.
