The Presidio ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Jan. 21 to approve four new career and technical education courses — Cybersecurity, Gaming Concepts, Theatre and Introduction to Aerospace and Aviation — and directed staff to conduct student-interest surveys before scheduling classes.
District staff described pathways for each course, noting that Cybersecurity will begin at a principles level and build to higher coursework, Gaming Concepts will include programming skills with connections to SkillsUSA and eSports, Theatre is intended to expand arts access, and Aerospace/Aviation will begin with drone-related concepts planned for later levels. Superintendent Carmen Rubner said the district will use enrollment thresholds and District of Innovation flexibility to consider industry-experienced instructors rather than waiting for fully certified teachers.
Board members pressed for clarity on equipment and costs, and staff said drones would not be included in Level 1 instruction. Marco Lujan moved to approve offering the courses and gathering student interest; Jeremy Velasquez seconded the motion, which carried 7-0. The district noted, "Approximately $200,000 available by May for CTE expenditures," and said further budget and equipment details will be provided before hiring or purchasing.
