Board approves 2026–27 school calendar; recess bill may force schedule changes

"Motion by Lana Nelson and seconded by Jennifer Heath to approve the 2026-2027 School Calendar. Motion carried 6-0," the minutes record. Board member Lana Nelson raised questions about enforcement if staff take leave on in-service days and said she would like teachers required to be at school on all in-service days.
District administrators also reported that playground plans are finalized and are awaiting vendor responses. The administrator noted that a newly proposed bill — not identified by name in the minutes — would require K–6 students to receive 60 minutes of recess each school day; board members were told this could require schedule restructuring for the next school year if the bill becomes law.
The board carried the calendar by unanimous vote; no timeline for implementation of any schedule changes tied to the recess proposal was provided in open session.
