Marquette County approves $3.9 million apron reconstruction grant at Sawyer Regional Airport

The Marquette County Board of Commissioners on July 21 approved acceptance of a Federal Aviation Administration Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act grant to fund reconstruction of the general aviation apron at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport.
"The budget for the project is $2,858,174 in grant funding with an additional $1,046,000 allocated to available State funding for a total project cost of $3,904,174," Airport Manager David Erhart told the board. The federal share reported was $2,715,265.30, with a state contribution of $142,908.70 plus the separate state budget allocation of $1,046,000.
The scope presented covers reconstruction of 11,000 square yards of apron; a separate Airport Improvement Program allocation will address additional sealing and spalling repairs on adjacent apron areas. Commissioners voted to adopt resolutions authorizing the execution of the FAA grant agreement (Federal Project No. 3-26-0153-064-2026) and to preapprove the Michigan Department of Transportation sponsor contract when it is issued. Both votes passed on roll call, 6-0.
The board also delegated authority to Chairperson Joseph Derocha and County civil counsel to sign the grant and contract documents, and asked airport staff to continue coordination with MDOT on contract terms and project schedule. The resolution and contract will be attached to the county file once executed.
