Van Alstyne ISD board adopts policy opting out of homeschool participation in UIL activities

Van Alstyne ISD trustees voted June 16 to adopt a policy declining to grant non-enrolled (homeschool) students the opportunity to participate in University Interscholastic League activities for the 2025–26 school year. The motion to adopt the opt-out policy was made by Mark Freeman, seconded by Beau Williams, and passed 4-0 with two board members abstaining after roughly 30 minutes of discussion.
Six members of the public spoke during the meeting’s public-comment period urging the board not to opt out of the new state law that makes homeschool students eligible for UIL unless a district adopts an opt-out policy. The board also directed Superintendent Dr. Brown to follow up with parents who raised concerns during public comment.
