The Scobey K-12 Schools Board approved the purchase of a new activity/route bus after staff reported a ready-made 54-passenger vehicle was available and offered first priority if the district moved quickly. A committee member’s amended motion required that the district be able to sell or trade its existing cruiser before finalizing the acquisition; the board passed the amendment by voice vote.
Staff member presented procurement options and recommended buying an in-stock cruiser-style bus rather than waiting for a custom-built 50-passenger vehicle. The staff member said the vendor had given the district priority and that the in-stock option reduced lead time. "they do have 54 passenger yellow buses in stock in our state for about $40,000, $30,000 cheaper," the staff member said, describing the immediate cost advantage of the available vehicle. Committee member [mover] initially moved to acquire the bus "as presented;" another committee member seconded. After discussion, a committee member amended the motion to require that the district be able to sell or trade the existing cruiser before completing the purchase; that amendment was seconded and adopted.
Board members queried the operational and financial implications before voting. Staff warned that the purchase would temporarily deplete the transportation account but argued depreciation would replenish funds within the year. The Chair called for a voice vote; all present responded in the affirmative and the Chair announced the motion passed. The meeting then adjourned.
