Board adopts uncertified teacher plan to meet state certification deadlines

The Riviera ISD Board approved the district's Uncertified Teacher Plan, which will be submitted to the Texas Education Agency by March 1 to meet new state certification requirements.
Ms. Dobson explained that under new law all elementary teachers must be fully certified by the start of the 2026–2027 school year. At present three elementary teachers in the district are not fully certified; administration expects one of them to complete certification by year-end and others are in an intern year. The plan establishes annual reduction targets for uncertified staff, with full elementary compliance by 2026–2027 and 100% district certification targeted by 2029–2030.
Trustee Becky Gutierrez moved to accept the plan; the motion passed 6–0 with one absent. The board discussed monitoring timelines and receiving periodic updates on certification progress.
