Riviera ISD trustees approved a phased plan Feb. 18 to replace seats on three buses so each passenger will have a three-point seatbelt, in compliance with new state requirements.
Jolynn Moreno told the board a state requirement effective Sept. 1, 2025, mandates three-point seatbelts on district buses, with full compliance required by Sept. 1, 2029. The district currently has three buses needing retrofitting; a preliminary quote estimates $27,920.25 per 50-passenger bus, though Moreno cautioned pricing may fluctuate. Administration proposed replacing or retrofitting one bus per fiscal year so the district achieves compliance by Aug. 31, 2028, earlier than the statutory deadline, and noted the possibility of pursuing grants to offset costs.
Trustee Crystal Ramirez-Garcia moved to approve the phased implementation plan; the motion passed 6–0 with one absent. Board discussion emphasized pacing replacement to align with budget cycles and seeking external funds where available.
