D.C. Everest board votes to seek earlier 2026–27 start to reduce private-school transportation costs

The D C Everest Area School District board unanimously adopted a resolution Dec. 10 requesting permission to begin the 2026–27 school year before Sept. 1 to “alleviate the excessive costs associated with transporting pupils who attend private schools prior to September 1.” The resolution says the district may commence the term “as early as August 24, 2026.”
President Lindsey Lewitzke moved the resolution; Larry Schaefer seconded. The board approved it by roll call, with all seven members voting yea. The text of the resolution cites Wis. Stat. Sec. 118.045 and Chapter PI 27 as the legal mechanism for requesting an earlier start date.
Board officials said the waiver request is intended to align D.C. Everest’s calendar with private schools’ earlier start dates and to reduce district transportation costs tied to running routes when private schools begin earlier. The board recorded no opposing votes and will submit the written request and stated extraordinary reasons to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as laid out in state rule.
The resolution specifies the district has made a “good faith effort to work with private schools to coordinate a school start date on or after September 1.” Under the motion, the district is formally asking DPI to allow it to open as early as Aug. 24, 2026; DPI will review the written request under Chapter PI 27.
