Riviera ISD approves pilot hybrid/virtual academy for juniors and seniors

Trustees voted to begin implementing a hybrid/virtual academy option for eleventh- and twelfth-grade students, a program administrators said is designed to increase enrollment, improve attendance and retain students who might otherwise transfer to neighboring districts offering virtual options.
Ms. Dobson described the proposed model: eligible juniors and seniors would apply and complete core academic coursework virtually while attending campus for required in-person components such as Career and Technical Education courses, laboratory sessions, testing, fine arts and athletics. "The primary goals of the program are to increase enrollment, improve attendance rates, retain current students, and attract transfer students who may otherwise enroll in neighboring districts," Ms. Dobson said. Board members discussed supervision, accountability, transportation, attendance monitoring, extracurricular eligibility and a limited initial cohort pending additional planning. The motion to start implementation was made by Tracy Hubert Beadle and seconded by Becky Gutierrez and passed 6–0 (Teresa May absent).
