Riviera ISD adopts multiple TASB Local policy updates and forms SHAC, threat assessment team

At its Nov. 19 meeting, the Riviera ISD Board of Trustees adopted multiple (LOCAL) policy changes recommended in TASB Policy Update 126 and formally established two statutorily required committees: the Safe and Supportive School Program Team and the Riviera ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC).
Mrs. Flores presented the required team membership for the Safe and Supportive School Program Team (also called the Behavioral Threat Assessment Team) and the Board approved its establishment in accordance with Texas Education Code §37.115. The Board also passed a resolution to form the SHAC under Texas Education Code §28.004; trustees discussed whether parent members would volunteer or be appointed and were told parents had been notified and could volunteer via district communications.
The policy update approved a range of local policy changes — including updates related to board meetings and public participation, contracted services and background checks, facility safety and cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, employee conduct, special education video/audio monitoring, grading and instructional materials, student welfare, and complaint procedures. Trustees approved the policy actions (motion by Becky Gutierrez) with one abstention from Teresa May.
