Trustees hear staff safety survey; district to explore School Resource Officer with sheriff

Superintendent Billy Colston presented aggregated staff survey results on safety and security, saying that staff generally feel "somewhat prepared" for medical events, evacuations, intruders and severe weather, but that a recurring theme was that an on-campus School Resource Officer (SRO) would increase staff comfort and perceived security.
"A recurring theme in the survey was that having an on- campus School Resource Officer (SRO) would increase staff comfort and sense of security," Colston said. He told trustees the district has discussed the request in a safety meeting with law enforcement and that administrators are reconnecting with the sheriff's office to explore the possibility of assigning an SRO; specific cost and staffing details were not yet available and will be returned to the board once they are determined.
Trustees did not take immediate action but asked staff to develop cost estimates and implementation options. The matter will be brought back when staff can present concrete proposals and budget implications.
