Markham outlines park, alley and water projects; mayor warns on casino revenue risk

City Administrator Derrick Champion told the council that Cook County's consulting engineer Arcadis was finalizing Dixie Park design and that construction is expected to begin in late April. He said Green Alley Phase II will begin in late March or early April, funded by an MWRD grant and Cook County funds, and that the city submitted Invest in Cook and CDBG grant applications ahead of the March 20 deadline. Neighborhood Lighting conduits and foundations are complete and poles and luminaires were scheduled for delivery in mid-March.
Mayor Roger Agpawa also raised concerns about state-level treatment of casino revenue sharing, saying the law contains open-ended provisions that could reduce Markham's share if the city is combined with a new casino catchment. "We need to fight to keep our revenue," the mayor said. Administrator Champion and staff said the city is working with legislators and county partners to protect anticipated revenue and is participating in the Cook County Water Affordability Program to improve meter replacements and leak reporting for residents.
