The Royal Independent School District Board of Trustees on Aug. 25 voted to set the 2025 property tax rate at $1.069917, a motion made by Trustee Melissa Woods and seconded by Trustee Cori Vahalik.
The motion's text stated the adoption was "effectively a 5.95 percent increase in the tax rate." Trustee Cori Vahalik asked the board to note a distinction: "while the language states that this tax rate results in a tax rate increase, our actual rate has been reduced from last year (and consistently each year)." The board approved the motion with six yeas; one trustee was absent.
