Red Oak Middle School presents Local Improvement Plan after D rating, targets SPED and emergent bilingual students

Christopher Thompson, principal of Red Oak Middle School, told trustees the campus was identified as additionally targeted and presented a Local Improvement Plan (LIP) based on the Texas Effective Schools Framework. He said the LIP concentrates on three prioritized levers: 5.2 (building teacher capacity through observation and feedback), 5.3 (data-driven instruction), and 3.1 (explicit schoolwide behavioral expectations and routines).
Thompson said two student groups — special education and emergent bilingual students — were the focus of the plan. "About 18% of our campus is special education," Thompson said when asked how many students were affected. The LIP sets measurable steps: administrators will complete a minimum of three documented walkthroughs per teacher each semester and provide feedback within 48 hours; the school will formalize data-analysis protocols after assessments; and it will implement progress-monitoring checkpoints and targeted interventions, including new ESL staffing and ELLA classes for emergent bilingual learners.
Board members pressed on practical questions: how teachers receive and interpret feedback, whether historical student profiles are available, and how the district coordinates data across feeder elementary campuses. Instructional leaders described dashboards in Eduphoria and new templates for feedback, and they said they will report back to the board with accountability monitoring results.
