Economic development director reports new retail openings, continued recruitment and workforce efforts

The city’s economic development director briefed council on ongoing activity and recruitment efforts, reporting that Popeyes and 7 Brew recently opened and that Academy Sports is on schedule for an anticipated Aug. 28 opening. The director said staff is working with businesses interested in the Shops at McAlester and exploring additional locations on Highway 69.
The director also described outreach to retain Factory Connection and to coordinate with regional partners and McAlester Army Ammunition Plant leadership on workforce and hiring issues. "We have also facilitated connections between private industry and NDSA leadership to explore potential public-private partnership opportunities," the director said, noting grant development and partnerships with area colleges to strengthen training pipelines.
