Residents raise access worries for Route 84 construction

During the public-comment portion of the hearing a resident who identified their neighborhood raised immediate access and safety concerns about planned work on Route 84. The commenter said the planned closures would make it difficult to leave Poppy Grove and asked whether a crossing across the canal could be built to preserve access.
The resident said, “When they start working on this 84, whenever they do start working on it, how are we supposed to be able to get across the road map when they have to they have that whole block off.” Chair acknowledged the concern, described the topic as contentious and said the city will coordinate with IDAP and assign staff—naming Ryan Harris, the public works director, and the police chief—to analyze egress and emergency access ahead of the construction season projected to begin in 2028. The commission treated the comment as a matter for follow-up rather than a decision at the hearing.
