Shallowater ISD board amends, then adopts resolution affirming students' right to pray in school

The Shallowater Independent School District Board of Trustees amended and unanimously adopted a resolution affirming students' religious liberties during a Feb. 25 special meeting.
Alana Hayes, a board member, moved to amend paragraph 2 of the resolution by omitting the word "regularly" and adding the phrase "are free to." Bradley Price seconded the amendment; the amendment passed unanimously, 7–0. Swade Moyers then moved that the board adopt the amended resolution affirming existing state and federal laws that protect students' religious liberties; Aaron Morris seconded and that motion also passed unanimously, 7–0. The minutes record the actions as agenda items 9851 (amendment) and 9852 (adoption).
Board members discussed, in the open session following a closed-session recess, the amount of time students might be allowed to read the Bible under a policy, but the adopted resolution does not itself prescribe a campuswide time requirement. The meeting minutes show the board reconvened at 5:44 p.m. after a closed session that began at 5:16 p.m. and adjourned at 6:18 p.m.
