Mercer County GEAR UP attendees plan student leadership, PSAT coaching and outreach

District staff and students returned from the National GEAR UP conference and proposed forming student leadership teams, using PSAT/mastery-prep data to guide summer interventions and expanding college- and career-readiness events across the county.
District representatives and student attendees reported back from the National GEAR UP conference in Washington, D.C. They proposed multiple initiatives to expand college and career readiness, including a GEAR UP student leadership team at each high school, PSAT score analysis and a series of boot camps and FAFSA workshops.
A student participant, Colton Bailey, and the district lead said GEAR UP paid for PSAT testing for underclass cohorts and that the district will again fund PSAT tests for interested juniors and sophomores. Administration reported they have compiled mastery-prep and PSAT scores for roughly 1,300 students and plan one-on-one meetings beginning Aug. 1 to interpret results and guide course placement.
Presenters also said they will pilot dual-credit outreach and career-pathway booklets developed by local graphic-design students, and they discussed practical next steps for local implementation, such as forming clubs and scheduling a summer boot camp for seniors. The board thanked the delegation and asked administration to supply further implementation details at upcoming work sessions.
