The Slaton Independent School District board heard a presentation from Mayor Shaw and City Manager Wade Willson about infrastructure options for land the district owns behind Allsup’s and about a potential land purchase on 20th Street.
Superintendent Shelli Conkin outlined the district’s campus inventory and athletic facilities as background for the conversation, noting building dates including Stephen F. Austin (1955), Cathelene Thomas (1928), the junior high (1938) and Slaton High School (1955). Trustee Kara Newcomb introduced the city officials who answered trustees’ questions about utilities and site readiness. Board President Carlos Bentancourt reminded the meeting that, “there will be no increase in taxes,” as the board discussed options.
The presentation provided information but produced no formal motion or vote. Trustees did not adopt a bond or purchase agreement during the meeting; the discussion was informational and intended to give staff and trustees context for future decisions.
Next steps: city and district staff will continue to review infrastructure needs and potential acquisition details before bringing any formal proposal or financing plan back to the board.
