Slaton ISD board upholds several administration decisions, orders teacher apology in grievance ruling

Following an extended closed session, the board voted on a parent grievance and two parent appeals.
On the grievance (under Board Policy FNG(LOCAL)) the board granted Request #1 to review attendance for Oct. 24 and Oct. 25, 2025 and "wants to ensure both days are reflected as excused," denied Requests #2 and #3 and upheld the administration's positions, and granted Request #4 requiring an apology from the teacher; the board also recommended a review of enforcement of the high-school cell-phone policy. The motion on the grievance was made by Board Member Kara Newcomb and carried unanimously (6-0).
On parent appeals (Board Policy FOD(LEGAL)), the board denied Parent #1's appeal and upheld the administration with modifications; that motion (moved by Kara Newcomb, seconded by Gabriel Johnson) passed 5-0 with Jaime Diaz recorded as abstaining. The board tabled Parent #2's appeal (motion carried 6-0). These outcomes were announced after the board reconvened at 11:34 p.m.
