Board President Carlos Bentancourt called the Sept. 9 meeting of the Slaton Independent School District Board of Education to order at 7:00 p.m. Superintendent Shelli Conkin opened the agenda by recognizing September Students of the Month: Kaizen Clark (Stephen F. Austin kindergarten), Zyah Lopez (Cathelene Thomas Elementary, 5th grade), Ethaniah Garcia (8th grade, SJH) and Emmadanyel McGraw (senior, SHS). Principals then gave brief campus reports following the recognitions.
Conkin presented the district’s enrollment report: "As of August 29th, 1316 students are enrolled," with Stephen F. Austin at 220 students; Cathelene Thomas at 455; Jr. High at 272; and the high school at 369. The superintendent also noted transfers for the 2025–26 year later in the meeting (154 transfers compared with 131 at the same time last year), a number the district will continue to monitor.
