The committee reviewed a draft letter supporting S400, "An Act to ensure adequate and equitable funding for public education," asking the commission to study the statutory, enrollment‑based formulas that determine Martha's Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) allocations. Alex Meleney and Rachel Orr worked on edits; Rick Homans provided comments that were incorporated. Russ Hartenstine moved to approve the letter with Rick Homans’s suggested changes and Elaine Miller seconded. The motion passed unanimously: 7 AYES, 0 NAYS, 0 ABSTENTIONS.
FinCom agreed to send copies to Senator Julian Cyr, Representative Tom Moakley, the Western Massachusetts advocate, the MVRHS administration and island select boards and finance committees. Members discussed timing relative to House Ways and Means Committee deadlines and concluded it was preferable to submit the letter promptly so other stakeholders could submit their own comments.
