Red Lion Borough Council voted May 12 to buy 15 parking meters for Franklin Street at a total cost of $8,119.50, a purchase the public works committee said will be paid from the borough parking meter fund. Dennis Klinedinst made the motion to purchase and the motion carried.
Several residents raised concerns during public comment about how metering will affect households without off-street parking. Michelle Gum (203 N Franklin St.) said the change would create hardship for people who must unload groceries and accompany young children, adding, “Concerned with the meters being put on Franklin St due to not having off street parking and having to unload groceries and a 7-year-old child.” Council members discussed designating resident-only parking on the far side of Franklin as a mitigation step.
Solicitor Mike Craley told council members at the meeting that a uniform parking-meter ordinance should be considered, referencing Hanover’s parking-meter approach that allows coin, app and credit-card payments and includes time limits. Council members signaled that an ordinance discussion and a one-way-street map (requested by the solicitor) will appear on a future agenda so rules and enforcement details can be finalized before meters go into service.
