Commissioners approve variance to address four homes off one driveway with safety conditions

The Comal County Commissioners Court approved a variance to the county’s Road Naming and Addressing order for properties served by a private driveway at 861 Charter Oak Drive, allowing a fourth residence to be labeled as "861 Charter Oak No. 4" rather than requiring the driveway to be named. County staff explained that private driveways with multiple structures typically require a driveway name to aid emergency responders, but the applicant appealed to keep the existing numbering convention.
The county engineer set conditions for granting the variance. "The property owners must install and maintain a 6 inch or larger reflective address for all 4 addresses off Charter Oak Drive, and maintain 6 inch or larger reflective wayfinders on the driveway itself," the county engineer told the court. The engineer also recommended wayfinder signs on the driveway showing the locations of numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 and warned that if signage is not maintained or if another property is added the driveway will be required to be named. The court approved the variance with those conditions.
