Comal County proclaims May as Mental Health Awareness Month; local providers describe services and events

The Comal County Commissioners Court adopted a proclamation recognizing May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month and invited residents to learn about local resources. "Mental health became deeply personal for me when we realized how much our oldest daughter was struggling," said Jessany Ferguson, director of Kamau MHDD, who accepted the proclamation on behalf of local mental-health partners.
Ferguson told the court her agency and partners served more than 4,201 active residents, noting that "over 600 of those individuals were experiencing suicidal thoughts" last year and that "over 270 individuals in our county have been screened in crisis" so far this year. She encouraged residents to use resources such as the 24/7 '988' crisis number, and invited the community to a children’s mental-health kickoff event on May 5 at Landa Park from 6 to 8 p.m. The proclamation urges residents to challenge stigma and support local service providers.
