Southwest ISD honors students, superintendent and names incoming Juan Alvarado Elementary principal

The Southwest Independent School District Board of Trustees opened its Oct. 21 meeting with student recognitions and district awards, then heard a public comment from Juan Alvarado about the district's decision to name a new elementary school after him. "Mr. Juan Alvarado addressed the Board extending his gratitude and expressed humbleness to the decision of the new elementary having his namesake," the minutes record.
Superintendent Dr. Jeanette Ball and trustees honored students of the month from Elm Creek Elementary, McNair Middle School and Southwest High School, rising-star students noted for improved attendance, and several students whose artwork was selected for the Texas Art Education Association's 2025 txEDCON Exhibition. The board also presented the Outstanding Mental Health Initiative Award to the Southwest ISD CARES Center and recognized Dr. Ball with the Mexican American School Board Association's Outstanding Superintendent Award. Dr. Ball introduced Denisse Hernandez-Gonzalez as the next principal for Juan Alvarado Elementary School during other business later in the meeting.
