Committee forwards Heather Haggerty nomination to New Bedford Port Authority

Naomi Carney, chair of the New Bedford City Council Committee on Appointments and Briefings, told members that Mayor Mitchell had submitted the appointment of Heather Haggerty to the New Bedford Port Authority to replace Raymond J. Hartman.
Haggerty described her background to the committee, saying, “I am currently the owner of Big G Seafood in New Bedford on the waterfront. It is a family owned business... I took over in 2011 from my father.” She told councilors her firm now operates three divisions including whole-fish sales and a biomedical division that processes horseshoe crab blood for pharmaceutical testing.
Councilors praised Haggerty’s fisheries and port-management experience and asked about how her business experience would inform service on the authority. Councilor Derek Baptiste said he hoped she would bring “a business owner’s perspective to the port.” After brief questioning, Councilor Sean Oliver moved to refer the appointment to the full City Council with a positive recommendation; the motion was seconded and approved to be placed on the Sept. 25 City Council agenda.
The committee noted the appointment term will expire on Dec. 20, 2026, and that Haggerty will likely be sworn in at the full council meeting if confirmed. No committee member recorded opposition in the committee vote.
