Toms River student representatives give final reports; district honors dozens of students

The Toms River Regional School District’s student representatives reviewed end-of-year activities during the May 20 board meeting and the board recognized dozens of students for music, science and scouting achievements.
At the start of the business portion, Ryan Makom, serving his final month as the High School East student representative, listed academic and athletic highlights, including AP testing, sectional qualifiers in track and a 13–0 varsity softball win on senior night. “For those of you who don't know me, my name is Ryan Makom, and tonight is my final speech representing High School East,” he said. Gabriela Costova of High School North and Sophia Sitta of High School South gave similar wrap-ups of school events and senior recognitions.
The board then heard a series of awards presentations. Heather Ko, Walnut Street general music and chorus teacher, read the names of more than 70 elementary students selected for regional and state honors ensembles. Josh Melson, vocal music teacher at Intermediate East, recognized three students who were accepted into the South Jersey Region 3 Junior High Honor Band. The board also heard from principals and teachers about student science fair winners and multiple Eagle Scout projects that benefitted local parks and schools.
The presentations emphasized student achievement across arts, athletics and STEM and included announcements about upcoming senior events, scholarship night and graduation logistics.
